Tour at 2000 Report from Elding. Like yesterday, we began the tour at puffin island to take nice photos of this colourfull bird. We then sailed straight into the sunset focusing our eagle eyes on the water surface. We only started explaining the clock system that a Minke Whale surfaced right in front of the boat, we couldn't make a better explaination of what was 12 o'clock. We followed this whale for a while, it was probably searching for food or even feeding close to the bottom because it was changing direction and going for long dive. We decided to find another animal so we headed further offshore where we found a second Minke. The rest of the tour was a bit more quite and just before heading back we saw 2 groups of Harbour Porpoises. We enjoyed the live music and the happiness of the passengers on the way back with a beautifull sunset on our back !
Tour at 1700 Report from Hafsúlan Like in the tour before we headed straight into the calm and sunny bay. After a while we spotted the first Minke Whale in this tour. In the same area were at least two other individuals, all of them seemed to be busy feeding and did not show a lot, so we decided to head on further out into the bay. The next species we found was a pod of 4 to 8 Harbour Porpoises surfacing many times and coming close to our vessel. After this great Porpoises we turned the boat and suddenly found a third Minke Whale, and shortly after a fourth one in the same area. They were surfacing at the same time and just great to look at. One of them was lunge feeding and surfaced just two meters in front of us that we could see the whole body under the surface. On the way back we decided to stop shortly at the Puffin colony Akurey to end this perfect day!
Tour at 1400 Report from Elding : We sailed 40 min to our main whale watching area looking for the birds in order to find a productive area. We found plunging gannets and feeding arctic terns, and then our first whale, but then we found later our second Minke Whale and a very great one with wich we stay for quite long. it was feeding actively, surfacing a lot and showing us its head and blow holes. But the best thing was that the whale was lunging and lunge feeding so many times that we could'nt count it, and showing a lot of its body. It was a very great Minkie that our researchers who were on boat recognised as "resight guy", since this minkie has been spotted several times already this year and the past few years. It has since this year a scratch on the right side of the dorsal fin. The whale was few times surrounded by a really nice pod of Harbour Porpoises surfacing so close to the boat, giving us a very nice show and sight of their brown bodies under the surface! Really great tour!!! Then we finnished this tour with Akurey puffin island.
Tour at 1300 (Report from Hafsúlan) This afternoon we headed straight into a sunny and beautyful, calm bay. Once we reached the area were we started the active searching we soon spotted splashes on the horizon. We went straight into an area with diving Gannets and found a Pod of White Beaked Dolphins within the birds. They were between 6 to 10 and great to watch. They came close to our boat as the were the same curios than us. While surfacing on our side and diving under the boat they made us a great show. After we had a great time with the Dolphins we headed on to search for an other species. First we met a pod o 4 Harbour Porpoises that were as usual challenging to spot. But than after a bit of searching we found the third species of the tour a Minke Whale! And this was a great Minke Whale, surfacing close to us and several times even lunge feeding in front of the boat! WOW! On the way back we ended this great tour with a visit a the Puffin colony on Akurey. Amazing afternoon in a beautyful bay with three species!
Tour at 1000 Report from Elding : We went first to Akurey island to see the puffins, and there were so many of them. Then we went further out in Faxafloi bay and spotted our first minke whales we had in total 6-8 of them and a small one which turned out to be juvenile. One whale has been really great coming close to the boat, showing a lot of its body, while the others were a bit more elusive and diving for long time. And coming out of nowhere : two very cute and entertaining harbour porpoises coming from the back right side of the boat towards the front playing with the waves, that everybody could see them very well under the surface and breathing, they went in front of the boat made a turn back to the right side, synchronising their moves and breathing behaviour. Really amazing to see them so easily.
Tour at 0900 (Report from Hafsúlan) We started at the very crowded puffin island Akurey in the morning. It was great to see so many of those birds coming close to our vessel. After that we did not search for a long time until we spotted the first Minke Whale of the day. We stayed a while with this individual until we headed on. Not 10 minutes later we found three other Minkes that were again great to spot. Beeing curios about a flock of feeding and diving Gannets we changed our spot again and found three plus more individuals, one of them lunge feeding 10 meters next to our boat. In the end of the tour the researcher named one new Minke Whales "Sierra" because of the cuts in the dorsal fin. Another Minke Whale we spotted on the tour we knew sinze several years, it is called "Humpie" becuase the dorsal fin is cutted and reminds on the one of a Humpback Whale. Definetily a great morning in a sunny Faxaflói Bay.
