A Shining Tribute to Peace and Hope

Each year, from the serene shores of Viðey Island just off the coast of Reykjavík, a powerful beam of light pierces the dark skies - radiating a message of peace, remembrance, and unity. This is the Imagine Peace Tower, a work of art by Yoko Ono dedicated to the memory of her late husband John Lennon and their shared vision for a more peaceful world.

What Is the Imagine Peace Tower?

The Imagine Peace Tower is a unique outdoor installation composed of a tall tower of light that emerges from a white stone monument bearing the words "IMAGINE PEACE" in 24 languages. Powered by geothermal energy and surrounded by natural beauty, the tower illuminates the Icelandic night with a symbolic message that resonates around the globe. The light beam is lit every year on 9 October, John Lennon’s birthday, and shines until 8 December, the day of his passing. It is also illuminated for other significant dates promoting peace and human rights.

Visiting the Imagine Peace Tower

Elding offers dedicated Imagine Peace Tower tours to Viðey Island, allowing you to experience this extraordinary sight firsthand. Our evening cruise takes you across the bay with views of Reykjavík’s skyline and surrounding mountains before reaching Viðey, where the light appears to reach the stars. Our tours are available on selected dates during the illumination period and include guided commentary about the art piece, its history, and the vision behind it. Whether you're a fan of John Lennon, an art enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates peaceful reflection, the tower offers a memorable experience.

Why Iceland?

Yoko Ono chose Iceland as the home for the Imagine Peace Tower for its commitment to renewable energy and unspoiled natural environment. The country’s deep connection to nature and the elements mirrors the pure intentions of the artwork - offering a space where visitors can reflect on the power of hope and the collective desire for peace.
