When sailing out from Reykjavik for whale searching, mount Esja, sometimes called "the queen of mountains" (by capital residents) is one of the first things you notice. Esja is not a single mountain, but a volcanic mountain range, made from basalt and tuff. Esja's formation dates back to the beginning of the last Ice Age, the volcano is no longer active. The mountain is one of the most popular destination for day hiking with the highest peak of which reaches 914 metres (2,999 feet) Esja can be used as a first name in Iceland.
