What to See and Do on Viðey Island
There’s more to Viðey island than meets the eye. It's not just an island - it's a hidden world of nature, history, and art just a few minutes from Reykjavík. Once home to a thriving monastery and later a key part of Icelandic life, Viðey island today is a peaceful escape with remarkable views, art installations, beautiful hiking trails, and plenty of space to explore.
Here are some top highlights:
- The Imagine Peace Tower: A tribute to John Lennon, lit every year from 9 October to 8 December. The tower was created by Yoko Ono and beams light into the sky from the island’s north side.
- Richard Serra's "Áfangar" Sculptures: Minimalist stone works placed across the island - blending nature and art in a truly Icelandic way.
- Walking Trails & Nature: Peaceful trails circle the island with views of Reykjavík, Faxaflói Bay, and Mount Esja. In summer, wildflowers bloom and birdlife is abundant - including puffins, Arctic terns, and eider ducks.
- Viðey House (Viðeyjarstofa): Built in the 18th century, this is one of Iceland’s oldest stone houses. It's home to a cosy café during summer, perfect for a warm drink or light lunch after a walk.
- Special Events & Cultural Experiences: During the summer, Reykjavík City Museum often hosts guided walks and family-friendly events on the island. These special experiences offer a deeper look into Viðey’s history, nature, and cultural significance.
