CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 09:00

Report from Eldey: The clouds were laying heavily over Faxafloi bay today and the fog creeped closer to us. The first sighting of the day was a few minke whales, with an estimate of about 3 of them passing by. They were shy and passed us by quickly so we only had a quick glimpse of them. A while later we were surprised to see a pod of around 10 white beaked dolphins popping up right in front of the boat. They swam very close to the boat and one started to jump repetitively, splashing hard on the surface. We got to spend some time with them and they were very playful. Shortly after we had a humpback whale that came up fairly close to us. This one did loud exhales and showed its beautiful fluke. Sadly, this individual was down for a very long time and did not show up after 12 long minutes, so we ran out of time and had to head back.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 13:00

Report from Eldey: We departed into a cloudy afternoon today, in search of whales in the Faxaflói Bay. While out at sea, we were accompanied by multiple marine birds, some of which flew right over us, probably hoping we would have fish with us (similarly to fishing boats). We saw fulmars, puffins and even the impressive northern gannet. Soon after, we saw a white-beaked dolphin breaching in the distance. This was a small group but, as we approached them, they decided not to interact with us. So, we left these dolphins and continued with our search. We soon found a minke whale, but this was also very elusive and hard to see. We had 3 more encounters with minke whales, all of which were quite similar. As these sightings made our tour way bellow average, we handed out complimentary tickets to our passengers, so that they could come back in the future and do a new whale-watching tour (either in Reykjavík or Akureyri).

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 17:00

Report from Eldey: We departed the harbour ready to start our search for cetaceans in Faxaflói Bay. As we passed the islands of Engey and Akurey, we observed some of our marine bird species, like the atlantic puffin, the northern fulmars and the great black-backed gull. We decided to carry our search effort on the southern part of the bay, as we had not been successful earlier today, when we searched further north. However, the south proved to be challenging too. At one point, we had a cute harbour porpoise who surfaced close to our ship, but this small and shy cetacean proved hard to follow. We later started our trip back home, with no further cetaceans sightings. But, of course, we provided complimentary tickets to our passengers, so that they could return for a new tour, later on.
