Tour at 13:00

Report from Hafsulan: It was a beautiful sunny day as we left the harbour of Reykjavik, with only a little wind and very little swell. Throughout the tour we were blessed with a wonderful warm sun, and lots of beautiful seabirds who were flying and feeding in flocks. These birds included the fantastic gannet, kittiwake and northern fulmar. The bay and surrounding areas were also bathed in a spectacular light and along with the rain and moisture in the air gave rise to the most beautiful and bright rainbows. Unfortunately, however hard we tried no cetaceans were spotted on this tour so complimentary tickets were handed out to all passengers.

Tour at 09:00

Report from Hafsulan: After a night of continuous rain, we got a break and enjoyed a departing with a rising sun in our back. Rain having just stopped, we were greeted out there by a magnificent rainbow, drawing a full arch in the sky. The first species we sighted was harbour porpoises, about 5 of them, surfacing with haste, obviously eager to put some gap between them and the boat. After sailing further away, we ended up in an area full of northern gannets fishing, and northern fulmars fighting to get on the best spots next to fishing boats. The area seemed to be full of food and life, so we gave it a try and strolled around. Suddenly a minke whale surfaced right in front of our boat, about 40m away from us! It then disappeared for a while and it took us long time before finding it again. But after persevering we could steal satisfying glances at it, before spotting a huge blow. There was our 3rd species of the tour, a glorious humpback whale! It was displaying an interesting sharking behaviour, rolling on the side and skimming the sea surface to feed. Such a stance made the tail fluke look like the dorsal fin from a shark, hence the name. We stayed with the humpback until it was time to go home, but not without seeing a second minke whale.
