CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: Beautiful sea conditions today with no winds and a perfect flat sea, make everything easy to spot any animals in the bay. The beginning was quite a slow start, with around 3 harbour porpoises that surfaced but not regularly and were very quick so most of passengers did not see them. We were still sailing a bit further out in the bay and after quite a while, we finally saw our first whale, 1 minke whale, a bit elusive individuals and did some deep dives. After few minutes, the animal were a bit closer to us 2 times. We learnt after from other boat that another species were in the same area, very close to us so we waited for the animal to come up at the surface. After 8 minutes, 1 humpback whale surfaced with a big blow ! We know this particular individual in the bay, which is Mariupol, one the humpback that was quite regularly in the bay this summer. We saw him surfacing 2 times showing its beautiful fluke which was a very nice sighting for all the passengers before starting heading back to Reykjavik.

WHALE WATCHING TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: These tours are easy with perfect weather that could not have been more beautiful. A calm sea, allowing you to spot animals miles in the distance and a shining sun. The only disadvantage was the distance to the feeding area today. It took up about 1hr and 15mins to start to see our first sighting. A minke whale in the distance. We didn’t want to stop as there was an area we wanted to get to with no time to loose. We still saw the minke coming up a few times before its longer dive. Then white-beaked dolphins crossed our path, a pod of at least 6-8 dolphins that enjoyed our company and frequently came towards and under our boat to play. These stayed with us a while before travelling away and so we used the opportunity to also continue on. The last encounter was a humpback whale we know very well, Mariupol, a male we have seen a lot this and last summer. Mariupol was diving for about 6-7 minutes but when he surfaced he was close and once even 20-30 meters away. Wonderful. With great conditions and great sightings it was a fantastic day to be out on the bay of Faxaflói.
