    CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 09:00

Report from Eldey: This morning the sea was a bit choppy, but we had nothing to worry about, since we had a comfortable swell in the bay. We also had a cold wind coming from the North and a very light rain, but the overalls kept us safe and warm during the whole trip. It was a very atmospheric morning and it felt like the sun was still coming up - gorgeous vies all around. Exploring the bay, we realised we had many seabirds around of of different species, indicating we had loads of food in the area! Our first encounter was with a small pod of 3 white-beaked dolphins. Its unusual to have such a small pod and they were more on the elusive side so after some time we headed on. Further out we got to see another pod of 5 dolphins. They were feeding and swimming around us. We stayed a bit and then headed past the whale fjord on the way home hoping to see another species. In the end we spotted another pod of 5 dolphins, feeding an coming extremely close to us. Surprisingly, we also had 2 minke whales at the same area, and it was coming very close to our boat, showing its very pointy snout! After having great looks at this  We headed back home admiring the beautiful landscape on this grey day, satisfied with our morning.

    CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: This afternoon the sun came out for us and the sea calmed down as well. The morning was fairly gloomy but still beautiful and this afternoon it was blue skies! We sailed out once more, eager as ever to see what was in store for us. After about an hour of sailing we spotted a minke whale! This one started off tricky but we managed to see it for a few times. Then all of a sudden we also spotted 3 white-beaked dolphins. They came up out of no where stayed with us a few minutes, before vanishing just the same. We tried to see this fast pod once more, but they appeared a bit too far from us. Before heading home, we first decided to swing by Esja to see if we would have more luck there. Its always amazing when we get so close to the mountain, but sadly no more cetaceans so we headed back. Since the sightings were very tricky and fast, we decided to give out complimentary tickets to the passengers so they can enjoy our favorite animals in another opportunity!

The Minke Whale is the most common whale around Iceland and actually the world thus it is one of the main species we encounter on our whale watching tours. It is one of few species that don’t mind coming to shallower waters like here in Faxaflói Bay to feed on the abundant food available to them.

The white-beaked dolphin is the most common dolphin found in the surrounding waters of Iceland and is seen not only in the summer but winter too usually in larger numbers, hundreds sometimes. When feeding they show energetic behaviour such as breaching out of the water and coming down with a big splash and bursts of fast swimming.
