CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 09:00

Report from Eldey: We headed out onto the gloomy bay under the pitter-patter of the drizzling rain. The weather was no match for our enthusiasm however, and with calm seas and no glare, we were in for some prime cetacean spotting conditions. As we were heading out, we spotted a dark back slicing through the water, our first minke whale! We were able to see a couple of surfaces from this elusive whale before continuing on. We soon spotted another dark shape in the water, much larger than the minke, and once we saw that telltale fluke rise above the surface, we were sure it was a humpback whale! We eagerly headed closer, and realized the water was absolutely teeming with fish. With the next forceful surface and blow of the humpback, it became certain that it was very busy lunge-feeding beneath the surface! We got several nice close looks at this whale, as it swam just meters from and beneath the boat multiple times, giving our vessel a little inspection from below, showing off its massive size and bright pectoral fins. We then spotted another gorgeous fluke, the second humpback whale of the tour. This whale went for much longer dives, showing off its beautiful tail each time. We were in an area with a lot of seabirds, and spotted 2-3 other minke whales also lunge-feeding. As we were a ways out into the bay, we turned to head towards Reykjavik, and began heading back. On our way, we spotted some sharp dark shapes, dorsal fins belonging to a pod of about 7 white-beaked dolphins. These curious cetaceans also treated us to some nice close looks, swimming by our boat. As we continued on our way, we were greeted by yet another pod, much larger, with at least 12 individuals. Satisfied with out sightings, we headed back towards the harbour, waving goodbye to all the cetaceans that treated us to such special encounters.

CLASSIC WHALE WATCHING | 13:00

Report from Eldey: The sky was grey and it was drizzling all throughout the tour but at least there was almost no wind and so the sea was flat as a mirror with just some slight swell rolling the boat. We went out and soon spotted the dark dorsal fins of a pod of white-beaked dolphins. As we got closer to them we could see that it was around 15 of them. The came close to our boat to check us out and in the calm waters we were able to take some nice pictures of them. After a while we went on and soon spotted a large flock of sea bird actively feeding on the surface. With them was a minke whale that we also were able to get some nice pictures of. We continued our tour after we spend a good amount of time with the minke whale and spotted two more on our way back to the harbor. Over all it was a great tour in not so great weather.
