Tour at 13:00

Again the sun was out but the cold Icelandic wind cancelled out the warmth from the sun. We started the tour at Akurey (Puffin Island) and saw many on and around the island with a couple flying very close to the boat. We then headed further North to an area where we have been successful with seeing Whales in the past to see if we could find some more cooperative individuals than this mornings ones. It wasn't until quite late in the tour that we came across some Harbour Porpoises a species that became the main attraction of the tour, seen frequently and close. Then finally the crew spotted a blow from a Minke in the distance, we edged closer and got a great glimpse of it but it soon disappeared. Finally towards the end of the tour we had two Minkes in the same area but heading away from each other. We chose one to follow and it was the best choice as it surfaced about 4 times and once no more than 30 meters from the boat. So it took us a while but we got there in the end. Birds we saw included; Gannets, Kittiwakes, Gulls, Skua, Guillemots, Puffins, Eider Ducks and Fulmars.

Tout at 9:00

The sun was shining but it was quite windy out in Faxaflói Bay this morning. We started at Puffin Island and the Puffins were out in there hundreds enjoying the nice weather. However, the Minke Whales were being quite elusive only surfacing once or twice and quite far away. Only one Minke Whale surfaced close to the boat (within 30 meters) but it was only once and very sudden so unfortunately most the passengers missed it. So all in all we encountered at least 3 Minke Whales but not very good sightings as they were being very elusive. That is nature and so we have to accept what we get each day and hope that tomorrow will be a better day.
