Report from Eldey: Happy first day of summer everyone! With a bit of overcast skies, we went out into the bay. Right outside the harbor we spotted the back of one minke whale. This individual gave us a few surfaces, but was quite elusive, so we continued on. Right before leaving our islands for the open bay we spotted another solitary minke whale! There were also some Northern gannets plunge diving in the area, letting us know that there is definitely fish right by our harbor. After multiple surface sequences, it was time to head farther out into the bay and see who else was out and about. On our way further out we passed another two solitary minke whales, but we watched them on the go and continued. We came across a flock of seabirds actively diving down and decided to take a look. Suddenly we had another minke whale lunge out of the water feeding! As we were watching this individual, another solitary minke whale surfaced on the other side of us, and a third whale surfaced in front of us. With three minke whales around us, it was wonderful as it allowed for almost continuous viewing. It was exciting to see the minkes lunge feeding and the birds diving down to try and snatch a fish themselves! After a wonderful viewing it was time to head back to port. With a total of 8 minke whales, we certainly had a successful morning!
