CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 9:OO

Report from Elding : Going out of the harbour at 09am we still had some sun light and light wind on our faces, but as we ventured further away the wind intensified, and got accompanied by some light snow even at some point. Does not quite feel like summer yet in Iceland. Luckily even though the wind was blowing, we got to spot one individual humpback whale, of a relatively small size. The humpback offered us a nice sighting, being quite close, regularly surfacing and doing mainly shallow dives. That humpback showed us the fluke just once, which was at the beginning of the sighting, and then did deeper dives only showing us its back more arched. We were happy to recognize the whale when it showed us its distinctive fluke, and we know that this individual does not have an ID yet but has been seen quite often in the bay. After this nice sighting, it was already time to go, and we headed back gently toward the harbour.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Elding: The wind had picked up a bit since the morning and on the way to our latest sighting hotspot we entered a very foggy area so the visibility today was challenging. Nevertheless, we hoped that the fog would clear up, as we know Icelandic weather is always unpredictable and ever changing. Indeed, after some time we started seeing more and more and when we reached the area where we had seen the humpback this morning, the sea around us was well visible. We slowed down the boat to scan the surface, and soon saw the large blow of a humpback whale! This was the same whale we had seen yesterday afternoon, its white fluke and exceptionally large body impressing everyone as it came up next to our boat. The individual was taking short dives of approximately 3.5 minutes, and always showed us the beautiful fluke as it went probably under in search of fish. When we analysed the fluke of the whale, we recognised it as Stu, an individual we have seen in Faxaflói in 2015 and 2018 too! On the way back to Reykjavík we encountered a pod of around 4 harbour porpoises and then we were happy to go back into the saloon to get warm with some hot chocolates and teas.
