CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: We had lovely conditions today. Barely any wind, sun was shining, great visibility and only a small swell on this morning tour. We saw a large blow in the distance and headed over there. On the way we had a spontaneous visit from a minke whale that came right in front of our boat, but it only surfaced twice or so. Our journey continued to the large blow. This was a humpback whale. However, it seemed to be a tricky one. It did long dives and surfaced very inconsistently and short. Two blows caught our attention further away so we headed there. Another two humpback whales were resting side by side. They were slowly coming up to the surface and got close to us so we got great looks of them. We could also see the beautiful white pectoral fins through the water. We were spoiled that we got to stay so long with them both. Another two individuals were seen further away, so we checked them out. They were also together which was fantastic to see. As well they were more active than the previous pair and kept showing off their gorgeous tail flukes next to our boat. During this interaction we also had a minke whale passing by close to us several times. We even saw too more blows in the far distance, but did not have time to check it out. The bay was alive today, so many whales! On the way back to port we had a pod of around 5 harbour porpoises that were travelling close to the boat and you could even see them through the water. What an amazing day out at sea that we had today!

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: The wind and then waves had calmed down when we set off once again. This made for excellent conditions. The sea was very calm and we could feel the sunshine on our faces. Whale sightings were great too! Not long after we left port, we encountered a minke whale, shortly followed by another one! These beautiful little baleen whales treated us to some decent surface sequences. When we carried on, we were elated by our first whale sightings so early in the trip! The sightings kept coming too. We spotted some blows and discovered two humpback whales! They were swimming together slowly and spending lots of time at the surface. They were likely resting. We noticed that one had propeller marks on its tail stock and a very white fluke underside, whereas the other one went for dives without lifting its fluke at all. After a while, we carried on and promptly found another humpback! This one was spending a lot less time at the surface with only a few breaths at a time. We also noticed that this one had a much darker fluke underside. After spotting all these whales, we had one more encounter before we headed home. It was two minke whales in the same area and both of them surfaced very close to our boat! It was incredible to hear these animals exhalations so clearly. What an eventful trip!

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 17:00

Report from Eldey: The ocean laid nearly flat on this tour which was absolutely fantastic. After a while we noticed two large blows in the distance a few hundred meters from each other. It happened to come from two humpback whales. We stuck with one of them for a bit and this one started to breach all of a sudden, and did so a couple of times. The first jump the body was entirely out of the water which was amazing, and the rest of the breaches were kind of half breaches. It continued to be active by doing many tail throws as well as rolling on its back and doing pectoral fin slapping. We were stunned! We went to the other individual that seemed to be feeding a bit and showing nice fluke dives. We went back to the first one and now this one had started to actively feed too. It was blowing bubbles and coming up for only a breath before heading down again to eat. Another blow caught our attention and we headed towards a third humpback whale. However it was going for a fluke dive before we had the opportunity to get really close so we waited around, but it took quite some time for it to come up. Our first two humpbacks had been pairing up so we went to see them a bit more. They repeatedly showed off their beautiful flukes. We saw a fourth humpback whale a bit further away too but did not go to investigate it further. As we were heading back to port we were surprised by jumping white-beaked dolphins. About five of them were fully leaping out of the water and causing large splashes. About four other individuals joined them in the jumping too a bit further away. It was incredible to see. As we turned around to get closer to them they stopped jumping, but instead came to investigate the boat closely. We could even see them through the water. Throughout the tour we had about six minke whales traveling by in the distance. These were just fleeting encounters, but on the way back to the harbour we did have one of those individuals coming up a few times quite close to the boat. Wonderful day!
