CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: The sea conditions in the morning carried on being excellent, very calm seas and very little wind. The sun even came out half way through the tour and warmed our skin gently. About an hour after leaving the harbour, we came accross a pod of white-beaked dolphins. They were about 8 individuals in total. It was heart-warming to see those animals free and wild, and eventually surfacing so close to our boat. A little bit further away we had a super rare encounter as we crossed our path with not 2 but 3 minke whales travelling together. On our way back to the harbour a huge spout could be seen. It was a humpback whale that was swimming pretty peacefully. Eventhough we are in a big boat and the perspective changes depending on the size of the ship, its massive body made us feel small, what a huge creature! So overall an excellent trip!

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR I 10

Report from hafsulan: very nice sea conditions, a little bit more windy than yesterday for this 10am whale watching tour. When we arrive in the hotspot area we saw 1 humpback whale that was taken quite very long dives, around 15 minutes. We did not stay too much longer and we followed our route to find something else. On our way we spotted another 1 humpback whale, doing some shallow dives. At some point, the animal came up very close to our boat and make us feel so small next to the giant animal. The passengers could see the white colour on the pectoral fins. Then we moved to another area where there was a group of birds trying to catch some fish. 2 minke whales appeared in the area but we did not see them too much longer. We moved a bit further out as another 1 humpback whale was there. It came up at the surface regularly, resting mostly and then went for a deep dive.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR I 1300

Report from Eldey: The afternoon promised us overcast skies but calm waves and only little wind. We left the bay in good spirits and got soon rewarded by a bunch of minke whales feeding together with screaming seabirds. It must have been about 4-5 different individuals with one or two surfacing quickly to grab some delicious fish. After admiring these hungry creatures for some time we left for a blow on the horizon. This blow turned out to be from a humpback whale! And this one seemed to not be alone. In the area we spotted the blows of 3 other humpbacks and some more minkes. One humpback really wanted to be the star of the show and started throwing its tail out of the water and also slapping it loudly on the surface. It gave us a massive show and everyone was absolutely awestruck. After this spectacle nothing was going to be better than this so we were happy to sail back to the harbour with amazing memories of jumping and feeding whales on our mind.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR 14:00

Report from Hafsulan: another trip with perfect sea conditions, with little wind and barely any waves. The sky was mostly covered by clouds which made the air somewhat cool, at times, but it was never too cold and it never rained. After about 30-45 minutes of sailing we reached an area where a humpback whale was spotted being very active. Fortunately we reached it in time, as it continued to move around a lot! At first it was slapping its tail on the side, then it was slapping its fluke flat onto the water surface, and after that it was lazily slapping its long and white pectoral fin, repeatedly and making a lot of noise. Sometimes it was even turning and laying on its back, raising its pectoral fins to the sky. A really goofy individual! After a while we had to leave this whale alone, as the whale-watching code of conduct tells us to not spend too much time with each individual to avoid bothering it, even though that particular whale was continuing with its show. We then circled the area, searching for other whales and wildlife. We spotted six minke whales and a pod of white beaked dolphins (consisting of 5-6 individuals) which seemed like they wanted to mind their own business, as we weren't able to follow them for long. On our way, we got to observe some interesting fight between arctic skuas and kittiwakes, gulls and even other skuas, with the first ones trying to steal fish from the others. As last sighting, we got to see another humpback for a brief moment, right before going for a deep dive.
