Although white-beaked dolphins are one of the most common and well-known cetaceans in Icelandic waters, we sometimes see fewer of them during winter, especially now that our winter tours often operate closer to land.
That’s why we were so happy to spot our first pod of the year on yesterday’s afternoon tour from Reykjavík. We found a group of five white-beaked dolphins, including one calf, making their merry way through the bay.
A lovely reminder that even in the heart of winter, Faxaflói can still surprise us!

The white-beaked dolphin is the most common dolphin found in the surrounding waters of Iceland and is seen not only in the summer but winter too usually in larger numbers, hundreds sometimes. When feeding they show energetic behaviour such as breaching out of the water and coming down with a big splash and bursts of fast swimming.
