CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 0900

Report from Hafsúlan: The first day of summer started with beautiful sunny skies and perfect sea conditions! We enjoyed the landscapes as we sailed in Faxaflói bay and after one hour and a half we spotted a pod of white beaked dolphins!! The pod was composed of all adult individuals about 8-10 dolphins swimming together, bow riding and very curious towards our boat!! They were resurfacing frequently and playing in the waves which gave us a chance to see them very well! We enjoyed the company of the dolphins for as long as we could but we were still quite far from Reykjavík so eventually we decided to say goodbye to the friendly pod of dolphins and start our way back to the harbour, still enjoying the view around us!

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 1300

Report from Hafsulan: this afternoon we sailed out with sun and a bit more wind than this morning. Not too long after we had a first sighting, spotted by our passengers! They pointed out splashes on out right side which turned out to be a pod of white-beaked dolphins. They were quite social and came very close to the boat which we were all happy to see. Once we left the dolphins, the next sighting was a blow. We tried to slowly approach the area until a humpback whale popped up right by our bow. After the grand entry the whale was taking very long dive, and even though we tried to wait for it, we ended up sailing on. We saw another blow in the distance, also a humpback whale. Although it was also taking quite long dives, we were able to see it twice. One last sighting was another pod of white-beaked dolphins on our way back.

The Humpback Whale is quite spectacular undergoing the longest migration of any mammal (5176miles/8334km one way), attracting females by singing to them and of course their energetic nature. On many occasions humpbacks have been seen breaching, tail slapping, fin slapping, blowing bubbles and spy hopping just to mention a few. The humpback is also one of the larger whales we encounter

The white-beaked dolphin is the most common dolphin found in the surrounding waters of Iceland and is seen not only in the summer but winter too usually in larger numbers, hundreds sometimes. When feeding they show energetic behaviour such as breaching out of the water and coming down with a big splash and bursts of fast swimming.
