CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: As we set out of the harbour this morning, most of our passengers sheltered inside from a heavy rain shower. Luckily, as we go passed the islands, the rain also passed and for the rest of the tour, we were in the dry. We were even treated to glimpses of the sun! Just after passing Akurey island, we saw a flock of birds diving down to the water as they were feeding. The splashes around them drew our attention to a small pod of 4 harbour porpoises jumping around and feeding under the birds. They moved on very quickly as we passed however, so we continued our journey. We then spotted 2 blows in the distance and as we drew closer, we saw 2 humpback whales! They were moving slowly at the surface side-by-side and we were able to watch them quite a few times before other whale watching boats joined us. One of the whales we could identify as Birdie! As we were waiting for the humpbacks to resurface, we also saw a minke whale lunge feeding a little further away - making big splashes at the surface. After all this luck, we searched some other areas but then had to start heading back to the harbour after a great morning at sea!

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: With a dark grey sky on our right side and sun peeking through the clouds on our left, we headed into Faxaflói on our mission to find whales! The water was almost mirror smooth, which made for great spotting conditions. After a little over an hour of sailing south, we spotted two blows far away in the distance, and promptly made our way there. Once we arrived, we were delighted with a pair of humpback whales moving in synchronicity. These were the same individuals from the morning! They took one dive before suddenly appearing right in front of us, almost within touching distance! Then, they began showing off the most amazing pectoral slaps right there in front of us, both at the same time!! They continued doing this behavior until we had to say goodbye, with one final fluke dive to top it all off. It was certainly a fantastic afternoon, enjoyed with some hot cocoa on the way back to land!

The Humpback Whale is quite spectacular undergoing the longest migration of any mammal (5176miles/8334km one way), attracting females by singing to them and of course their energetic nature. On many occasions humpbacks have been seen breaching, tail slapping, fin slapping, blowing bubbles and spy hopping just to mention a few. The humpback is also one of the larger whales we encounter

The Minke Whale is the most common whale around Iceland and actually the world thus it is one of the main species we encounter on our whale watching tours. It is one of few species that don’t mind coming to shallower waters like here in Faxaflói Bay to feed on the abundant food available to them.

The Harbour Porpoise is the smallest and most abundant cetacean around Iceland. They are usually shy but occasionally they come and play around the boats. They can be relatively hard to spot from a distance due to their size and their abundance depends entirely on the food availability of our shores since they are opportunistic feeders.
