Atlantic Mackerel (Scomber scombrus)


Mackerel has been known to migrate to Icelandic waters as far back as the 1900 and sporadically since then. It is now becoming more frequent due to the warm current oceanic conditions. Since, 2006 mackerel catches have increased exponentially around Iceland.

Average length from catches: 35-45 cm
Age reaching sexual maturity: 2-3 years
Average life span: Max age is ~ 20 years
Spawning Season: Not currently known to spawn in Icelandic waters
Habitat: Pelagic
Diet: Crustaceans, small juvenile fish
IUCN world status: Least Concern
Major Threats: Climate change, over fishing
