A very special encounter in Faxaflói bay, Friday 12 July 2019; a humpback mother and her calf ventured into the bay to everyone's surprise!
Humpback whales are polygamous mammals that become sexually mature at around 5-7 years of age. They have one of the most complicated courtships in the animal kingdom that entails in the males singing and chasing after the females. The pursuit can often become violent as they compete for dominance with other males. The female gives birth every 2-4 years and stays pregnant for a total of 11-12 months. Once the calf is born, they stay in warmer waters for about a year before the calf is strong enough to go off on its own.
