We set off this morning excited to find wildlife. At one point we were surrounded by what felt like 100s of black legged kittiwakes and sooty shearwaters. We found two solo white-beaked dolphins and a minke whale! Sailing out again this afternoon, we found 6 minke whales and a small pod of 8 harbour porpoises around the islands near Reykjavik.
Before we even left the harbour, we saw our first northern lights! They were faint to start, but soon stretched across the whole sky. They were dancing above us and all around us, fading sometimes and then growing stronger again.
Due to unfavourable weather conditions, we have decided to CANCEL the Northern Lights Cruise tonight!
We set sails on our morning tour and were soon surprised by a quick moving minke whale. Moving further, we encountered an elusive humpback whale and 8 harbour porpoises. Finally, a second minke whale appeared, much friendlier and even treating us to two lunge-feeds. The afternoon tour was cancelled due to weather.
We sailed towards Hafnarfjörður this morning and were thrilled to find 4 humpback whales. In the afternoon, we sailed from Hafnarfjörður, quickly encountering 4 resting humpbacks. We later saw 4 pods of harbour porpoises and 2 minke whales and a surprise humpback among them, topped off with an unexpected breach close to Reykjavík!
We had a pretty good forecast tonight. Once we got further out we could see the big dipper and we also made a stop by the Imagine Peace Tower. Unfortunately however we never saw any auroras, so we issued complimentary tickets.
The bay was calm as we drifted, and after a while, faint northern lights appeared behind the clouds. As the auroras were subtle tonight, we offered complimentary tickets for anyone who'd like to try their luck again!
