Protecting Iceland's Whales

Together we can end whaling in Iceland

Iceland is one of the best places in the world to witness whales in their natural habitat. But despite the success of whale watching and the global support for conservation, commercial whaling still takes place in Icelandic waters.

The Icelandic government continues to issue commercial whaling licences, even though public and international opposition is strong. While most Icelanders don’t eat whale meat, some tourists try it out of curiosity, unintentionally fuelling demand. We believe education and responsible tourism are key to ending this practice.

What We’re Doing

Elding has been openly against whaling from the very start. For years, we have been publicly advocating for the protection of these incredible animals, using every opportunity to raise awareness through our tours, outreach efforts, research collaborations, and international partnerships.

We believe that respectful encounters with whales in their natural habitat are not only inspiring but also a powerful tool for change. Through education and experience, we aim to shift perspectives and build public support for the protection of whales, not their exploitation.

Our main focus is on:

  • Public outreach and education on every tour
  • Conducting and supporting whale research
  • Speaking out against whaling through our platforms and partnerships
  • Encouraging responsible tourism that supports marine conservation

But lasting change doesn’t happen overnight - it requires collective effort, and the political will to do what’s right. While we, as a private whale watching company, cannot directly shape government policy, we can and do play an active role in influencing public awareness and attitudes. We use our platform to share knowledge, highlight the value of living whales, and offer an alternative to whaling that benefits both the animals and the local economy.

Equally important are the voices of our guests - travellers from all over the world who come to Iceland to witness whales alive in their natural environment. Their support sends a powerful message: people care, and the world is watching. When this message is echoed loudly and clearly, it can help shift both public opinion and political priorities.

Together, through conscious choices, sustained advocacy, and voting for leaders who prioritise sustainability and animal welfare, we can help bring an end to whaling in Iceland for good.

What You Can Do

Don’t Eat Whale Meat

It may be offered in some restaurants as a "local delicacy," but in reality, it’s not a staple in the Icelandic diet. Studies show that most of the demand for whale meat in Iceland comes from curious tourists rather than locals. By choosing not to try whale meat during your visit, you’re sending a clear message: whales are not food, and killing them to entertain tourists has no place in a modern society. One person’s choice not to consume whale meat may seem small, but collectively, these choices are already helping reduce demand - and that matters.

Support Whale-Friendly Restaurants

Many Icelandic restaurants have committed to not serving whale meat and have proudly joined the Whale Friendly initiative. These businesses recognise that sustainable tourism and ethical practices go hand-in-hand. When you choose to eat at a whale-friendly restaurant, you’re not only making a more ethical choice - you’re supporting local businesses that stand for conservation and animal welfare. Look for the Whale Friendly sticker or check the list below before you dine.

Join the Campaign: Meet Us Don’t Eat Us

This award-winning campaign, led by IFAW in partnership with IceWhale, aims to educate visitors and locals about the realities of whaling in Iceland. Through outreach, petitions, and information materials, Meet Us Don’t Eat Us encourages people to experience whales through whale watching, rather than on a plate. By supporting this campaign, you help amplify the message that these majestic animals should be admired in the wild, not hunted for profit.

Choose Responsible Whale Watching

When you book a tour with a responsible whale watching operator - one that follows a code of conduct, contributes to research, and puts education at the heart of the experience - you're helping to shift the narrative from exploitation to protection. Ethical whale watching provides economic value to living whales, proving that they’re more valuable alive than dead. It also creates powerful moments of connection that inspire people to care and speak out. Every ticket sold supports a growing movement toward non-lethal, respectful, and science-based marine tourism.

Every Action Makes a Difference

Ending whaling in Iceland isn’t out of reach - real change can happen when enough people speak up, make conscious choices, and stay engaged. As individuals, travellers, businesses, and voters, we all have a role to play in shaping a future that values living whales over outdated practices.

We believe in the power of dialogue with respectful, informed conversations, and in using our voices to influence the decisions that affect the oceans and wildlife we care so deeply about. Ultimately, protecting whales requires more than awareness - it requires action. By making thoughtful choices and voting for leaders who prioritise animal welfare, sustainability, and conservation, we can help turn the tide and move toward a future without whaling in Iceland.
