Tour at 13:00

Again we headed out from Grindavík due to the bad weather in Faxaflói Bay. This time trying a different area further out because of the lack of cetaceans on the first tour. The wind was speeding up and the snow was getting heavier so we sailed towards land again. No whales yet. The time was running out so we began our trip back to the harbour when suddenly one of the passengers that so eager to not leave Iceland without seeing something, spotted the first whale of the day, ORCA!!. First, one individual was spotted (a big male) which disappeared but then two were seen (a smaller male and a female). We stayed with them for a while and on occasion they came very close to the vessel so the passengers could get a great look at them from outside and within the saloon, WHAT LUCK, just goes to show you that you should never give up hope.

Tour at 09:00

The snow was the main spectacle for this tour, it was pretty amazing, as those of you staying in Reykjavik at the moment would see. It is everywhere and too windy to make a good snowman!. The tour started out from Grindavík and we headed offshore to the East. No luck with the whales offshore so we went closer to the coast and to the 70 meter high bird cliffs to view some of nesting Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Razorbills and Guillemots that have arrived and found a nest early before it gets too crowded. Unfortunately no whales on this tour but the weather is meant to be improving so hopefully the next tour will be more productive.
