Tour at 13:00

Sometimes we go out of our way to increase the chances of finding the whales for our gests. We do that by mowing the boats to other harbours, for example if the weather looks to be better there or we think it’s more likely to find whales. This means the tour takes sometimes some more time because we have to take the people by bus to the boat and back again. This was the case today. We took out from Hafnarfjörður and after just 15 minutes we saw a small pod of Harbour porpoises, very shy, but still we were able to see them a few times. Soon after we lost them, the first mate saw a black back far away. We sailed there but for some time we did not see any whales but some gannets entertained us instead. As we were about to give up, some of our passengers saw the Whale, a Minke Whale. For the next 20 minutes we saw the whale many times but it was hard to get close to it. But we patiently tried and finally we got to close to the boat, for all to see. Then we gave it a rest and searched further out and after a while we were lucky again. A pod of White Beaked Dolphins, maybe 6-8 individuals crossed our path. They kept their distance because they had a couple of calf’s with them but everyone got to see them. On our way back we locked for the Minke again but did not find it.

We will sail out from Hafnarfjörður again tomorrow.
