Tour at 1700
Report from Elding: The sky was dark and rainy as we sailed out to what was to become the last trip of day that had been very successful hitherto. With the 0900 and 1300 tours having seen a number of Minke Whales and Harbour Porpoises in addition to rich birdlife, we had high hopes for this one but those hopes came to no avail as not a single Minke Whale was seen on this tour. It is hard to guess why, possibly they had left for a Eurovision party somewhere deep below us. However, the positive side of the tour was that we got to see the only White-beaked Dolphins of the day!
Tour at 1300
Report from Hafsúlan: The weather was still not that nice but atleast the rain stayed off. Again we headed out to the same area as this morning and once again we were not disappointed. We saw at least 4-6 Minke Whales and three small pods of Harbour Porpoises. The Minkes were great surfacing just meters from the boat and Gannets plunging cms from the boat. Again a big feeding frenzy in the bay.
Tour at 0900
Report from Hafsúlan: It was wonderful to be back out on the water today after being cancelled the whole day yesturday (due to strong winds), it was quite windy this morning so it did feel a bit like a roller coaster ride at times still, the rain stayed of us which was great. We found an area with at least 7-10 Minke Whales and a couple of Harbour Porpoises which were travelling very fast so i don´t think many of the passengers got to see them. The Minkes however, were magnificient, surfacing all around the boat some close, some really close and some further away. Birds were everywhere in this area too, Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Seagulls, Arctic Terns, Great Skuas. It was a feeding frenzy. Incredible whales in not the nicest of weathers.
Report from Elding: we had a windy beginning to the tour as we sailed out to meet the whales, dolphins and porpoises of Faxaflói Bay. We started at Akurey to see if our friends the Puffins would be present, which they were, although mainly on the water and in the air. There were only very few on the island itself. Afterwards we headed out to the bay and kept our eyes open and about. It took us 40-50 minutes before we spotted the first Minke Whale relatively close to the boat. It soon took a long dive and disappeared, which saw us back on the search, one which didn't take too long for soon we were in the company of at least 2 others of their wonderful kind. Seeing one is always great but having more than one is a bonus. While we might have liked to have less wind, the joy of meeting the Minkes made us forget about the rocky boat.
