Elding goes gold with EarthCeck

Elding Whale Watching has secured the prestigious EarthCheck Gold level of certification through the world’s leading certifier of travel and tourism organisations.

EarthCheck is widely regarded as the world’s most scientifically rigorous environmental management Program, designed specifically for the travel and tourism industry.

The Program is trusted by more than 1200 organisations in over 65 countries. It is used to measure key environmental indicators such as: energy and water consumption; total waste production and community commitment.

EarthCheck helps to determine an operator’s, community’s or government’s standard of environmental, social and economic performance and requires compliance to internationally recognised standards.

In order for us to gain EarthCheck Certified status, we were required to submit a year’s worth of operational data to EarthCheck for Benchmarking purposes. This was then compared to the operational data submitted by similar organisations, before being rated against Baseline and Best Practice levels. We were also required to submit to independent, third party auditing, to verify the accuracy of our sustainability claims.

By displaying the EarthCheck logo, we are signifying our commitment to the efficient use of natural resources, the environmental education of staff, guests and suppliers and the use of biodegradable products.

Our policies require the use of energy-efficient lighting, the minimization of water consumption, recycling of solid waste products and use of recycled products whenever possible. This has resulted in a decrease in Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG) for our operations.

To increase the standard of living for host communities, we source supplies produce and supplies locally whenever possible. We foster eco-cultural understanding and sustainable development and give preference to hiring local people.

We would like to thank our staff for their commitment to sustainable tourism practices and we ask all guests and suppliers to help us to restore and conserve the surrounding environment, care for local communities and drive economic health through tourism.
