The Festival of the Sea is celebrated in Reykjavík Saturday 2 June and Sunday 3 June. This is an annual event featuring lots of fun for the whole family. A diverse programme of events takes place from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon.
On that occasion Elding will connect Viðey Island to the festival area with a special ferry from Grandagarður pier to Viðey Island. The island has strong connections to the history of fisheries in Reykjavík as the best harbor facilities in S-Faxaflói were there until Reykjavík’s old harbor was built in the early 19th century. On a short visit to the island you can check out the area where Milljónafélagið (the millionaire corporation) and Kárafélagið ran their fishing fleet and fish processing facilities along with all the other treasures Viðey Island holds.
Viðeyjarstofa café offers interesting refreshments with strong connection to the festivals theme. On Saturday 2 June a special contests in arm wrestling, the traditional fishermen’s strength contests, and other activities related to the sea is held between 13:00 and 15:00 outside Viðeyjarstofa.
The festival ferry departs from Grandagarður pier, with a short stop at Ægisgarður, every 60 minutes from 10:30 to 15:30. The regular Viðey ferry departs from Skarfabakki pier in Sundahöfn every 60 minutes from 11:15 to 17:15 and more often if needed. The ferry toll is ISK 1.000 kr. for adults, ISK 500 for children 6-18 years and free for the youngest. Tickets are sold on the day of departure.
