Report from Elding: A windy and slightly miserable start to the midnight sun whale watching tour. Overcast skies and fine rain. This improved throughout the tour and at the opportune moment the skies cleared and the midnight sun pushed it´s way through the clouds and the night ended so beautifully. We had incredible sightings of 3 pods of white-beaked dolphins, that seemed to be very busy feeding, it´s always amazing to watch these animals problem solve the challenges of schooling the fish in such a huge bay. There must have been at least 15-18 dolphins in total. The bird life was also diverse and abundant where the dolphins were. On the way home we had a quick glimpse of 2-3 harbour porpoises and enjoyed the musical talents of Bjarni. Unfortunately no whales but the midnight sun definitely made up for it. A miserable start but a beautiful finish.

Report from Eldey: The weather was okay, the sea was calm no rain and the wind was okay. But it was difficult to find the cetaceans. After some time we found one white-beaked dolphin. But it was very elusive and difficult to follow. Than we saw a big flock of birds in front of us, and than underneath the birds a minke whale popped up. We got to see it feeding. Very special to see. The way back was very relaxed, we got to enjoy a nice ride.

Report from Hafsúlan: In terms of how wet it was the weather had definitely improved from this morning when we left the harbour - but the wind had certainly picked up! Fortunately we didn't feel too much of it on our way out as it was coming from a south-westerly direction. We soldiered our way far out into the bay and just before we gave up hope, we caught a glimpse of a minke whale. Unfortunately, the animal only surfaced twice before deciding to earn its elusive reputation and disappear on us. Despite trying out hardest to find other animals, we were unable to on our return so we handed out complimentary tickets.

Report from Eldey: This tour was more sunny and windy than the previous tour, accounting for a great sailing experience. But besides some great flocks of seabirds we were not able to spot any wildlife on this tour. Thus, we handed out complementary tickets to all our passengers and hope that they will come back for another hopefully more successful tour with us.

Report from Hafsúlan: We had some real icelandic weather during this tour, starting with rain and an overcast sky and winds increasing throughout the trip. Althought the spotting conditions were fair, apparently the wildlife we usually encounter on our tours had just moved to another part of the bay for today. So of course we offered everyone complementary tickets and the chance to go out with us again, either here in Reykjavík or Akureyri.

Report from Eldey: There was a strong wind and some rain but the sea was calm and there were just a view waves. As we left the harbour it took us a bit of time before spotting our first cetaceans. But than we got to see a big splash. We headed that way and we found a minke whale. He was a bit elusive, and view to follow. Than we got a call from another boat that they had seen 5-6 white-beaked dolphins. When we got there we got to see them too. They where very playful and we all got a look at them, there were even some small ones among them. Very cute. On the way back we got to see 2 harbour porpoises. They were swimming very close to the boat, this way got a good look at them. Also the rain had stopped and we all got a lot of fresh icelandic air.

Birds seen today: common guillemot, eider ducks, atlantic puffins, northern gannets, phalaropes, arctic terns, arctic skuas, kittiwakes, northen fulmars, european storm pertrel, black-backed gulls and manx shearwaters.
Status: RUNNING
We are sailing out from the Old Harbour in Reykjavik today. Its going to be an overcast day and the sea will be quite rough. If you are sensitive to sea sickness, we do provide sea sickness tablets, free of charge! We hope you are able to join us on the search of these magnificent animals in their natural environment.
