CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: All conditions were perfect for whale watching but we had to sail for a long time before we found anything. It was a small group of about 3 harbour porpoises that were swimming as usually quite elusive and fast. One of them even jumped out of the water, that is something very unusual, so it was very special to see. As we continued the tour we realized that there was an animal in the distance. It was a minke whale. Even though we could not observe it for long everyone got to see it up close, swimming to the left hand side of the boat. Once we thought we were getting lucky as another whale watching boat spotted something nearby, but it turned out to be a very sneaky minke that did not want to be whale watched. This trip proved how unpredictable the wild nature can be and we were a bit disappointed, that is why we offered complimentary tickets for another whale watchig trip with Elding, valid for next two years, here in Reykjavik or in the North of Iceland - in Akureyri.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: After being on land for some days it is an honour for me to be guiding again! The sea seemed calm enough and there was barely any wind, that is how we sailed out into the bay under overcast skies which made the whale watching conditions perfect as the sea surface reflecting the grey colour was a good contrast with the black bodies of the animals. It took us some time to find our first whale, but this one was worth it. It was a known humpback whale, our beloved Mariupol! This whale surfaced with big spouts in the grey waves and fluked up. We stayed about 4 minutes and then he came back up again! We watched him breath and the fluke up a second time! The next time he came up it took him longer, about 7 minutes and he also breathed for longer on the surface until it was time to fluke up for the third and last time, nicely showing us its underside every time. While waiting for Mariupol we were also graced by the presence of a beautiful minke whale. Amazing creatures these whales.
