Tour at 17:00

Report from Hafsúlan: it was slowly clearing up but still the clouds covered most of the sky this evening. The wind was not as strong like it had been in the afternoon tour and the swells not as high which made the searching for the cetaceans easier. We began by going to the aria were we had found the minke whale in the morning tour, after sailing there slowly for few minutes we spotted a minke whale in about 350 meters distance. We could see it surfacing for few times and even got so lucky to smell its stinky breath before we lost sight of it. We kept on going and found another minke whale, it was spending a long time under water so it was very hard to follow it and we were running out of time so we had to head back to the harbour. On the way back we saw the third and the last minke whale of the tour.

Tour at 13:00

Report from Elding and Hafsúlan: The rain clouds were all around us but it was only light rain. The visibility was limited not just in the surrounding landscape but also because of the wind and swell. The passengers in the overalls and rain jackets were bravely watching and searching in the permanent rain. The cetaceans were wet any way and on Elding we have been so lucky to meet some of them. We started with harbour porpoises one of them was leaping in a 10m distance from the bow of the boat. Then we found a minke whale which was at the beginning difficult to watch but later on it emerged several times relatively close to us as it changed its behaviour from travelling to milling and probably feeding. Our boat was not moving but the minke came up several times in our vicinity which gave everybody the chances to have a proper look at it. Later we got even luckier when another pod of harbour porpoises appeared in front of us and we could observe them travelling along, showing again their whole body when they leaped from time to time or telling their position through the splashes they made. In total there were more than 4 individuals of this tiny porpoises visible. So we saw toothed whales and baleen whales properly. Some very attentive passengers even managed to spot some more fins around, congratulations.

Report from Hafsúlan: the sky was covered with clouds when we headed out on the bay this morning, it rained on us throughout the whole tour but we didn’t let that stop us in the searching for the cetaceans! It was hard to find much life on the bay except for few northern gannets and northern fulmars that flew over the boat now and then. But when we were half way through we finally spotted a minke whale! When we were watching this wonderful animal in about 200 meters distance another species popped up in front of the minke whale, this was a group of 3-4 harbour porpoises, really small and cute animals. We were able to follow this minke whale for some time getting a decent sighting.
