CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: We had the most wonderful whalewatching tour today, with bright sunlight, little wind, and lots of whales! We had hardly sailed past Engey before the first blow appeared - a humpback whale! He was logging at the surface, moving slowly and giving us plenty of time to observe his white-marked body. Since the individual was probably resting, we quickly moved on in the direction of a second humpback whale´s blow. This individual, Calamity, was much more active and frequently showed us his tail fin before going on short dives. He seemed rather curious about the boat and kept circling us and came very close to the boat. In the meantime, we observed a third humpback whale and were very excited to see the individual we know as Ekki (renowned for his lack of fluke diving) show his tailfin! Ekki came even closer to the boat, and it was just incredible to see his silhouette just a few meters from our portside. When we thought we had seen it all, we saw the final blow just a hundred meters in front of the concert building Harpa by the harbour. Calamity had moved all the way to the harbour and gave us the perfect ending to an amazing tour. The whales are full of surprises!

The Humpback Whale is quite spectacular undergoing the longest migration of any mammal (5176miles/8334km one way), attracting females by singing to them and of course their energetic nature. On many occasions humpbacks have been seen breaching, tail slapping, fin slapping, blowing bubbles and spy hopping just to mention a few. The humpback is also one of the larger whales we encounter
