Tour at 17:00

Report from Hafsúlan: The sunset was simply wonderful on our evening tour. We sailed only for about 20 minutes as we spotted the first minke whale. It surfaced several times and we had it relatively close to the boat. We decided to go further on as we saw another minke whale almost in the same area. We watched this guy as well and than we also had some harbour porpoises around the boat. After a while we found two other minke whales but both were a little bit illusive. We found two more harbour porpoises and on the way back to the harbour there was another minke whale. It was a very good end of the tour because this whale came very close to our boat.

Report from Elding: What a beautiful afternoon! The sea conditions were perfect for whale watching and we spotted somewhere between 8-10 minke whales! We spotted two minke whales quite close to land. We followed one of them for few minutes before heading further out. We did not have to go much further as we spotted more minke whales there. We noticed that we had them all around us! This was very beautiful moment with the minkies as they were surfacing slowly all around the boat, some quite close and other a bit far away. We even spotted few harbour porpoises swimming slowly near the minke whales. It was a very nice aftenoon with the minkies.

Tour at 13:00Report from Hafsúlan: The sun was hiding behind the clouds this afternoon but the sea was calm and the weather warm enough to make this a very good whale watching day! We had to sail out a little bit before we spotted our first Minke Whale of the tour but it surfaced quite often so we all got a good look at it. While watching the Minke we saw a small pod of Harbour Porpoises so we could watch two species at once! Then we heard from our sister vessel Elding that they had another Minke Whale very close to Reykjavík so we headed there to try to get a look. That was definitely a good call because that was a very big and lovely looking Minke. The sea and air was also full of life, the sea boiling with mackerel and diving Gannets all around! On our sailing back to the harbor we spotted two other Minke Whales and watched them for a while so in total we had four Minkes on this tour!

Report from Elding: it is odd how things change sometimes. Our sistership Hafsúlan had been out for an hour before we went out and had enjoyed both many and excellent Minke Whales not far from the mouth of Hvalfjörður. Then we went out but it was almost as if the whales had decided 'Ok that is it, we're off for a bit'. We hang around the same area as they had but we only saw 2 Minke Whales and each one spent some considerable time underwater, we had to show some patience. It paid off but we have certainly had easier whales. Then on the way back a small pod of Harbour Porpoises (5-6) showed itself for a little while before they headed out into the bay.

Tour at 09:00Report from Hafsúlan: We sailed out this morning from the old harbor in Reykjavík in a nice calm weather. We did not have to sail far out the bay because it was full of life this morning. After only a short sail we spotted the first Minke Whale of the tour but it was far from being the last! All in all we saw around 4-6 Minke Whales on this tour, some of them pretty close and then others a bit further away. After spending a very good time with the Minke Whales we heard from another whale watching boat that there were a small pod of White Beaked Dolphins close by! The dolphins were very playful and playing in the waves that our boat made. In hole this was a very nice trip with calm sea and good encounter with both Minke Whales and Dolphins.

Birds seen on todays tours: Northern Gannets, Shaqs, Common Eider, Glaucous Gull, Lesser Black Backed Gulls, Fulmars and more.
