Tour at 17:30

We went out on a privat whale watching tour on Elding II with a group from France. It was truly a perfect tour! We spotted many Minke whales, a couple of them very close to the boat, and some cute Harbour porpoises. We were enjoying the sightings when we got a call from the crew on Elding. "We found the humpback again!" they said. We headed over there and watched the beautiful animal for a while with them. When it was time for Elding to head back to Reykjavik Harbour we stayed with the Humpback a little longer on our own. It came close to the boat and we were able to see the long white flippers under the surface. All of a sudden the humpback whale jumped high in the air, maybe 70 meters from us! And then again! And again!! It was a fantastic sighting :) The French guide said this to us after the tour: "I have been working in Iceland since 1998, going with groups on all kinds of tours, and this was the best tour I have ever been on!" Needless to say that we were very happy to get a comment like that! :)

The weather was beautiful and the sea a lovely green colour today! We spotted again a big blow in the distance and found the Humpback whale again, and in the same area at least 15 Minke whales, surfacing everywhere we looked, although usually quite far away. We managed to get a good look (and smell) at the Minke whales as well as the Humpback! A few lucky passengers were also able to spot the Harbour porpoises too. A very successful day for us :)

The fog went during the tour and we had a fantastic view. The sea was very calm and made it easy to spot and watch the whales as well when they were far away. On our way to Puffin island we already spotted two nice white-beaked dolphins, that was a nice surprise! When we were at our whale watching area we has for sure more than 15 minke whales around us. They didn´t come very close this time but we were sourrounded by them. Some of them were lounge feeding there where we had as well feeding birds! While we watched them we spotted a huge blow in the distance and sailed a bit to find a humpback whale. It showed several times its fluke and came often quite close.

This morning we had very strange weather. It was very foggy and so the visibility was very poor. In spite of this, we were quite easily able to find an area where there were lots of feeding birds as well as lots of Minke whales! The weather was quite strange and beautiful in this area, blue sky above us but fog all around. We spotted about 10-12 Minke whales as well as a group of Harbour porpoises.
