Tour at 13:00

Report from Eldey: While it was mostly overcast, we had some sun every now and again, but unfortunately sea conditions were a little rough today. It took us a little while to spot the first cetacean, but after roughly an hour, we spotted a minke whale ca 200m in front of us. This individual was very elusive and we did not spot it a second time. We decided to sail on and look for more or different species. While we were looking for more cetaceans, we were joined by many sea birds including a couple of puffins, some arctic terns and northern  gannets. After a while, we spotted another minke whale, which was awesome. We saw some feeding sea birds and stayed in this area hoping to see the minke again. This minke popped up a couple of times, once even as close as 20m away from the boat! Waiting and slowly sailing around this area, we spotted another few harbour porpoises (approx. 3) as close as 10m away from the boat. This was very cool, as during these conditions it is normally very difficult to spot these animals. We did not see many more individuals after this and had to return after a while. On our way back, we heard from the other whale watching vessel 'Andrea', that they sighted a humpback whale. Sailing towards their location, we spotted a humpback about 200-300m away. This individual however remained unseen for most passengers and because we didn't have enough time, we had to continue our way back to Reykjavik. Overall, it would have been nice to see more cetaceans on our tour today, but with a very good sighting of the minke whale, some harbour porpoises and lots of interested sea birds, it was a fun trip through the faxa bay.

Tour at 10:00

Report from Hafsúlan: We sailed out with a little bit of bumpiness and some waves crushing on our boat. Luckily for us the spotting conditions where rather good and we had our chance with the cetaceans in the Faxafloi. Although we sailed out the first our of the tour quite  close to the shore, getting a little bit of shelter from the land, we soon directed ourselves to the middle of the bay. In the meantime we spotted in the distance 3 huge splashes, which were doubtless cause by a whale breaching. We headed to that area, hoping to see the show up close but unfortunately that whale (a humpback whale as some other boats that were on the area already told us) didn't show up.In exchange we got to see a pod of 6-7 white beaked dolphins for a few minutes. Among them two calves were jumping and leaping out of the water, pure joy. Unfortunately again, it looks like they behaved a little bit protective with the young ones and soon they left us. We saw a couple of minke whales surfacing now and then, around 100 m away from the boat. Although we saw some cetaceans, the rather elusive behavior and the rough conditions made the tour not as good as our usual summer standards so we gave complimentary tickets to our passengers. We hope that they will be a little bit more lucky next time!

Tour at 9:00

Report from Hafsúlan: We had rough seas today so we decided to stay closer to the shores on our way around Faxafloi. We got a very nice look of landscape around Reykjavík, especially the Sneifallsness Peninsula. The swell was making it difficult to spot animals so we really were concentrating a lot on spotting. And it paid off! After two hours we found a humpback whale that got close to the boat and even showed us it's fluke! Also, we were surprised by at least one, possibly two minke whales in the same area! One got very close to the boat and surfaced several times. On our way back we even got a short view of the beautiful white-beaked dolphins, a pod of 3-4 individuals. So in the end the tour turned out to be very exciting for everyone on board.
