Report from Eldey: A nice leisurely ride out into the bay as we sailed slowly with the wind pushing us from behind and nice rocking motion as we surfed the slight swell today. Beautiful snow covered scenery greeted us as we got further out and plenty of bird life too; eider ducks, shags, gannets, fulmars, black-headed gulls and iceland gulls making up the majority of the birds seen today. Gannets were particularly fun to watch, nice to see so many, as they torpedo dived into the ocean for fish. By the amount of birdlife in the bay we were optimistic that we would see some cetaceans. Just then a few harbour porpoises got some passengers attention, just 2-3 individuals but they were difficult to spot, just small splashes as they surfaced very quickly to breath before diving again to catch their next meal. 15 minutes later another pod of harbour porpoises surfaced and these were easier to follow, surfacing a lot slower and it was so cute seeing them with calves, baby porpoises that were so tiny compared to the already small adult porpoises. No other cetaceans were seen despite a very thorough search by the crew in the bridge and the guide on the top deck with the binoculars. In the end we had to count our losses and offer our passengers complimentary tickets to come and try again for free. We really hope the cetaceans will be making their way into the bay very soon.
