CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: The sun started to pierce through the clouds when we started our sail out of the harbor but it was just  to fool us: no sun at sea, only clouds. However, it was a super comfortable sail in a beautiful smooth silk-like sea. Our first species was the harbor porpoise, we observed briefly 2 pods both of about 2 to 4 individuals that passed us by. We went on with our journey, as harbor porpoises are too busy feeding to care about our presence, to try to find bigger animals in the area. We  went in the direction of one vessel that had seen some cetaceans to encounter a humpback whale along with several pods of white beaked dolphins, close to the ship we saw around 5 of the white beaked dolphins, but also noticed another pod in the distance of at least 3 individuals. The humpback whale was doing 10 min dives, busy looking for food we then just saw it a couple of times, including its magnificent fluke. We noticed more whales in the area, we then moved to observe a few minke whales, we observed around 10. Hard to count, they just appeared everywhere some of them quite close but most of them in the distance all around our vessel. In the same area was a pod of about 4 harbor porpoises, surprisingly quite close to the boat, we do not get to see them so good so often. Which led us to see our 4 main species in this trip, making it a really good trip.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: The harbor porpoise day celebrations continued with prime whale watching conditions, as the seas were flat and the rain was absent. The swell surprised some of us by rocking the ship a lot when the waves were hitting from the side, but our mighty vessel has seen way worse. The whales were of plenty and, as the name of the day implies, we saw a huge amount of harbor porpoises, which were all over the bay. Together with the porpoises, tens of minke whales made their quick appearance, some far, some near the ship. In the area we observed also a couple of humpback whales, which were lazily deep diving, probably to catch some consistent snack. We thought we saw it all when, on the way back, we were surprised by the breach of a third humpback whale. This individual breached other two times; probably it was a bit drunk after all the fermented krill it drank - some humpbacks really go for it during harbor porpoise day. We were really in a rush to get home but we were stopped by a pod of white beaked dolphins (<10 individuals), which didn't want to leave us alone until they were able to say a proper goodbye.
