Report from Eldey and Hafsúlan: A perfect day to be sailing in Faxafloi: very little wind, smooth flat seas and sunshine. Since we went out on two boats today, we could search through a very large area, Eldey starting on the East side of the bay, Hafsulan on the West side along the Reykjanes peninsula. After about one hour of sailing, we spotted a blow in the distance: a minke whale. Both of the boats headed towards the blow and very soon the whale popped up again. Spotting conditions were ideal with flat water surface and the monotone grey color of the water, so anything dark appearing at the surface was easy to see. There was big flocks of sea birds as well and even at least 10 harbour porpoises popping up in between. This was indicating that very likely this area was full of fish for the animals to feed on. Our minke whale seemed to be very hungry and chasing after the fish as it was going around and changing direction constantly. A little extra challenge to keep up with this whale but nevertheless a very nice encounter. We sailed back with happy smiles on our faces while enjoying sunshine over the snowy mountains.

 TOUR ON SCHEDULE | 9:00

Report from Eldey: It was beautiful this morning, the seas were like a mirror, slight rolls from the storms past but definitely one of the best mornings (weather wise) of this year.  We saw the wonderful colours of the sunrise with dark moody clouds. Lucky we stayed dry. After 1 hour we found an area with a lot of birdlife, guillemots, gulls, gannets and a many harbour porpoises. It was hard to count exactly how many but at least 20-30 porpoises I would say and most passengers got to see them. We tried to find larger whales and dolphins but unfortunatly we were unlucky. We offered our passengers complimentary tickets to enjoy another whale and dolphin watching excursion for free, we hope with more luck.

Birds seen on today's tours include; northern fulmars, eider ducks, northern gannets, glaucous gulls, greater black-backed gulls, common guillemots, razorbills, red-breasted mergansers, black-headed gulls.

We are sailing from the Old Harbour in Reykjavík today for the tour at 9:00 and 13:00.
