Tour at 19:00

Report from Hafsúlan: We were heading towards the sunshine for our evening tour, which made the spotting a little more difficult, but set a nice background for the tour. Our first sighting was a pod of 2 white-beaked dolphins, which surfaced right next to our boat. However, they disappeared just as fast as they arrived. Shortly afterwards we found 3 minke whales. The whales surfaced quite unpredictably around the boat, which made it difficult to take photos of them, but most passengers were able to see them a few times. Then a blow in the distance caught our attention. As we were heading closer to take a look another pod of 3 white-beaked dolphins surfaced just ahead of us and also went for a dive beneath our boat, so that people could see them up close. Then we found the cetacean that had produced the big blow. It was a humpback whale, that surfaced in rather predictable intervals just ahead of us. We got to see the blow, the dorsal fin and also at one point the tail of the whale. After this lovely encounter we headed back to the harbour enjoying the sunset and some music to accompany it.

Tour at 17:00

Report from Eldey: The wind had picked up and it was a bit colder compared to earlier tours today. But the sun was shining, and we were excited to go out and check out the wildlife in Faxaflói. This tour turned out to be quite challenging, as the cetaceans where quite elusive. We came to a area with bird-activity and stayed for some time, and it did get obvious to us that there was 1-2 minke whales in the area. We stayed a long time, hoping we would get a good look at the whales, but they where not cooperating on this occasion. On the tour we did get to see a small pod of 2-5 harbor porpoises close to the boat, northern gannets diving and several other bird species. But we where not satisfied with the experience we could offer our passengers with cetaceans on this trip, so we invited everybody back to try again, giving out complimentary tickets. Hope to see you again and better luck next time!

Report from Hafsulan: Weather was perfect and it was a pleasure to sail under shining sun. After successfully morning we were excited to continue our whale watch. Soon after leaving Reykjavik behind, in the shadow of mountain Esja we found 2 white-beaked dolphins. This couple was absorbed with traveling, maybe in search for food, and we easly follow them by keeping them on our side for better view. As they didn´t show any interested in us, we continued to look for more. We went to all previous locations but it looked like all bay´s wildlife was having siesta. We were searching everywhere, being with touch with other vessels but without much luck. As we are in high season now it´s very likely that our next tours will be only better in terms of sightings, and our passengers were invited do come one more time with complimentary tickets.

Tour at 13:00

Report from Eldey: What a sunny day that we had today! We sailed out to the flat bay and enjoyed the sun. Our first spotting was a minke whale that surfaced in front of the boat. We had a closer look and then another minke surfaced right by the other one. We saw both surface a couple of times before they went away. We then saw another minke surface and were able to  stay with that individual for some time, seeing it surface 4-5 times before going for a dive. On our way back after the tour we saw 2 minkes surface but did not stay with them for to long. We then enjoyed the ride back home in the good weather.

Tour at 10:00

Report from Hafsúlan: The weather was looking amazing, when we started our tour this morning. Flat sea, sunshine and only very little wind. We were sailing for some time, when suddenly a pod of 4-6 white-beaked dolphins crossed our path. The dolphins were unfortunately rather elusive, but most passengers managed to get a good look at them anyway. Shortly after this encounter we came across an area were we found 5 minke whales. One of them was 'Humpie', an individual that has been first seen in the bay in 2011 and there were also two juveniles. We were able to spent some time with the minkes surfacing all around the boat. When it got a bit more quiet in this area we kept going and found some flocks of feeding seabirds and again around 4-5 minke whales feeding in between! On the way back a smaller pod of 2 white-beaked dolphins popped up on the side of our boat as well. Altogether an awesome tour with great weather and amazing cetaceans.

Report from Eldey: Salling out from Reykjavik in completely calm sea, no wind and blue sky, we had high expectations for Faxaflói. We sailed for about 40 minutes, until we reached a area that turned out to have a lot of activity today. We stopped when we saw one minke whale, but in the time we stayed we saw a total of 7 minke whales! They where all around the boat, and we could stay and enjoy the animals for quite some time. One of them was a juvenile and we even spotted the famous “humpie”, which is a minke whale that has been seen in Faxafloi for many years. We sailed back to Reykjavík after this nice encounter, and was happy that Faxaflói did not disappoint on this tour!
