Report from Eldey: Just in one hour the wind dropped considerably. It always amazes how quickily the weather can change in Iceland. The sea still had a bit of a roll to it when out offshore but the wind dropped to almost nothing going from about 8m/s from the north east to 2-3m/s to the south east. Amazing! Straight to the area we were this morning and after an hours sailing we started to see white-beaked dolphins splashing around in the distance. After 20 more minutes of sailing we arrived and suddenly found ourselves surrounded by scattered groups (called pods). During the next hour we must have seen the dorsals and splashes of at least 20-30 dolphins if not more. The leaped and bow rode and seemed to be socialising amongst themselves. We left the dolphins after a while and went searching for the minkes. We got word from another whale watching vessel about one they found but it was elusive and didn't stick around long, so we didn't get to see it. 20 mins later they found another and once in the area we saw at least 4 minke whales and a small pod of 3-5 harbour porpoises, at one point we had one on each side and one behind. WHERE TO LOOK!! one even surfaced just 5 meters from us. What an amazing tour!!

Report from Eldey: Beautiful blue skies and crisp winters air made this morning great. Quite windy but we used the mountains to gain shelter and had mostly a pleasent sail. It did get a bit choppier once out in the middle of the bay that caused a few green faces. After about 1 hour and 20 minutes we started to see a few splashes from white-beaked dolphins, as we got closer we saw more and more. Must have been at least 15-20 animals scattered in the area. They were not really interested in us but obviously on their dinner. We were able to watch them for a while but minke whales started to get our attention. We saw at least 2 but it was mainly the blow we saw, with a few black backs now and again. It was nice albeit very cold. Quite a few bought a ´whale punch´ (hot chocolate and rum) at the bar to warm up the insides. An enjoyable tour in the end.

Birds seen today included: eider ducks, common guillimots, iceland gulls, glaucous gulls and black-headed gulls.
We are sailing out from the Old Harbour in Reykjavik on this beautiful but cold day. It is a bit windy in the morning so the sea could be rough but if you are sensitive to motion sickness we offer preventative tablets in the ticket office, free of charge!
