Tour at 13:00

Report from Eldey: The wind was even getting stronger and the sea more rocky. When we got to the area where we had the sightings on the morning tour. There were still a lot of birds in the area but not as many as on the morning. This looked promising with the birdlife as it seemed there was still a lot of fish in the area. After some time we spotted a humpback whale few hundred meters away, while watching it we spotted splashes in another direction, when we got closer to that area we saw this was another humpback whale. unfortunately these were both a bit elusive individuals so it was not easy to get a good look at them. We lost sights of them after a while but we found another humpback 30 minutes later. We were only able to follow this one for a short time until we lost it again. On the way back it got really rough because we were sailing with the strong swells hitting the side of our boat.

Report from Eldey: We sailed out on a sunny but slightly windy day as we travelled out the swells grew slightly but it was still a pleasurable sail out. There were a few flocks of feeding seabirds and some beautiful plunge diving northern gannets. A minke whale was then spotted amongst these birds and we were able to watch it surface a few times despite the crashing waves. A humpback whale was the spotted further in the distance by its rather large blow and we travelled towards it. On our way two pods of harbour porpoises were spotted which came amazingly close to the boat. As we neared the humpback we were able to get fairly close views as it pushed itself out of the swells. A further two minke whales then surfaced one meters and three hundred meters from the boat. The humpback whale then resurfaced from a deep dive and were able to watch it surface a few more times. Another minke whale then surfaced and we stayed to watch it surface and feed on the numerous fish that were around the boat, which many of the seabirds were feedig on. As time was running out we started heading back to harbour and found ourselves yet another minke whale. It was a nice tour, the sun even stayed out for us even though the wind and swells grew larger.

Bird species seen on todays tours: Northern fulmar, northern gannet, kittiwakes, lesser & greater black-backed gulls, common gullimots and atlantic puffins.

We are sailing out from the Old Harbour in Reykjavik on this lovely and sunny day. There is little to no wind but there could be some waves out on the bay. Have a wonderful day
