    Humpback back

It did not take us long before we stumbled upon 2 humpback whales that were very relaxed. We watched them for over half an hour before we decided to move away as boats were accumulating around the whales.

We went to similar areas as we did in the morning, but it took us a long time to find our first whale. We then saw the blow from a humpback whale quite far away, and it was blowing very frequently. As we got closer, we realised that there was another humpback whale right next to it!

We journeyed out into Faxafloi with every seat filled, stopping at one of our preferred destinations to scout the area. After a short pause, our captain saw the blow of a humpback whale within 500 metres, but we soon discovered that in fact it was two individuals and appeared to be the pair from yesterday.

It was a group of 3 white beaked dolphins that came at us two times but then was playing a bit hard to get. We then saw another 2 humpback whales that were quite close. One of those humpbacks started peduncle slapping, tail-slapping and lobe slapping. We admire the show and started coming back to Reykjavik. We stopped when we found 2 minke whales!

This humpback was not very easy to spot, moving fast and not showing the tail so we decided to try another that we knew other boats could see earlier further away. We went, found the blow of the animal and approached carefully. Then the humpback whale breached!

We decided to check out the two humpbacks our colleagues had found in Kollafjörður, super close to land. The waters there were so calm, the opposite of the ocean out in the bay. It was magical to see two humpback whales so close to land surface in the calm ocean, with the mountains and islands surrounding us.

As we were cancelled the last days we were expecting some swell but nothing compared to yesterdays forecast. It took us a while to see our first whale sighting, a humpback whale after at about 2 hours into the tour.

The highlight of the tour was an atlantic puffin that, for some reason, had not left the breeding stations, and was very nice to see. No signs of whales were spotted so in the end we gave passengers, who were very positive and understanding, complimentary tickets for another tour.

We kept going and managed to locate a pod of 8-10 white beaked dolphins. Especially juveniles´ behaviour was thrilling to watch. Some breaching and them getting closer to our vessel was very exciting. After a while with these dolphins we tried to find other species in the bay. We succeeded at that as we encountered a humpback whale in the area.

We sailed out in about 8m/s winds from the SE which meant it was smooth sailing for the majority of the tour and only a little rocking on the way home. We searched a large area of the bay and found just one solitary humpback whale, however this whale was amazing, obviously busy feeding but surfacing frequently and showing a beautiful high tail many times.

There, a passenger spotted some whale movement. We quickly found out that these were about 6-7 white-beaked dolphins, with at least one baby calf that kept jumping up like a gymnast. The other ones were quite curious and came up to the boat to inspect us and ride in the waves that the boat was making.
