Tour at 13:00

Report from Eldey: After very rough sea and strong winds in the morning we had much better conditions. The sea calmed down and also the wind was not as strong anymore. So we had a nice ride to our main sighting area, enjoying the sun and the fresh breeze. However, after about 1.5 hours sailing we still hadn't seen any whales or dolphins yet. But we saw a huge flock of feeding birds in some distance and decided to go there, as chances are often very high to also encounter cetaceans feeding in the same area. And we were not disappointed. The crew spotted a Minke Whale close to the feeding birds. Unfortunately, this Minke Whale was very elusive and could only be seen three times by the crew and a handful passengers. While enjoying the feeding Northern gannets which are birds known for their spectacular plunge diving when feeding, the captain spotted a huge blow in some distance. So, we headed towards this direction and saw a few more blows when approaching the area. When we got closer to the animal, our first impression was confirmed: We were looking at a Humpback Whale. And this individual was a real entertainer. It stayed very close to the ship and surfaced again and again sometimes less than 20 m away from our vessel. So everyone got a good view and could look at the different behaviors of this animal, showing its fluke or head, making high blows, and also doing launch feeding. What an amazing experience to watch this beautiful giant!
