Report from Eldey: With winds coming from the Southeast today, it made for a pleasant and sunny winters day to be out on the ocean. With white caps around, spotting conditions were not ideal, but we have found cetaceans in far worse conditions so no reason for us to not be optimistic. After about 70 minutes, we were surrounded by birds, mainly northern fulmars, that were gliding in the air currents and from time to time diving down to catch a fish or two in their beak. And then we had to actually look twice to be certain, but just 300 meters away from us a blow suddenly came up from the surface of the water! It turned out to be of a humpback whale. This individual seemed to be foraging close to the water surface as it came up very frequently and never raised it's tail, or fluke, to go down deeper. While it was changing direction with nearly every surface, it never moved far. That made it easy to follow and watch. We were actually enjoying so much that we ended up returning late to the harbour having enjoyed an extra quarter of an hour with this whale.
