Report from Elding: It was still a little windy in the bay with about 8-10m/s blowing from the north and the waves picked up a little also but the passengers were loving it. Some adventurous passengers were even at the bow enjoying the splashes that occasionally come over the starboard side. The bird life was definitely more abundant this afternoon compared to the morning and after about 1 hours sailing we found a HUGE flock of birds of all different varieties and feeding with the birds was at least 3-4 minke whales. The speed in which they surfaced when lunging for their food was incredible but we also got some nice slow surfaces too allowing us to capture some memories in the form of pictures. As we were enjoying the minke whales a humpback whale popped up out of nowhere very close to the boat and on the second surface even closer just a couple of meters from our bow and the passengers probably got a little shower from the whale snot, lovely! We tried to see the whale again but it was difficult to follow so we continued following the minke whales again and saw 6-8 more as they were definitely the stars of today’s tour especially the last two as they surfaced again and again just meters from the boat under a flock of birds. Amazing!

Report from Elding: A windy morning in Faxafloi today, more than the forecast had led us to believe. Once past Hvalfjöuđur though, it was a bit less rocky and the sailing smoother. As we sailed, we saw a variety of bird species passing our way, making this not just a whale watching tour but a nature tour. Our patience was tested a lot this morning, but initially it paid off. It was a little over half into our tour that we spotted a humpback whale as it breached out of the water! It was behaving very elusive after that but as we kept our eyes open for it, we spotted another humpback whale which even presented us a tail slap and a bit more of it’s body. While circling the area, 2 minke whales also came around. They surfaced quit frequently, making it easy to spot them for everyone and definitely charmed us when one came up just 2 meters from our bow! Great that we know to stay optimistic until the last minute and this tour proved that.

Birds seen on today’s tours include: atlantic puffin, arctic tern, manx shearwater, common guillemot, arctic skua, northern gannet, kittiwake, black-backed gull, northern fulmar, eider duck.
We are sailing from the Old Harbour in Reykjavík today for the tour at 09:00 and 13:00. There is always a chance of a little movement out on sea, so if your are prone to sea sickness we have sea sickness tablets available at our ticket office.
