✔ TOUR ON SCHEDULE | 13:00

Report from Elding: As our previous tour did not go as planned, we now headed much further south, exploring and searching a different part of Faxabay than before. Waters were calm and the gray sky stayed dry for a good part of the tour, making the visibility rather good. After nearly an hour of sailing, winds began to pick up and it became more choppy in the times waves were coming from the sides, but we know that this makes no difference for cetaceans so we continued our search. It took an extra portion of patience today, but finally we encountered an area with diving northern gannets and 3 minke whales! Two of them came close to our bow and right side, feeding on the fish at the surface and thus even lifting their rostrum a little higher out of the water than usual. We spend almost half an hour in the area, but as winds and waves picked up we began to sail back, happy with having seen our first minkes since two days.

✔ TOUR ON SCHEDULE | 09:00

Report from Elding: Finally we had very pleasant weather this morning with little to no rain. Calm wind from the S (6-8m/s) that picked up later in the tour and swell less than 0.5m. The bird life in the bay was incredible, gannets plunging into the water everywhere, guillemots, puffins and shearwaters too. Despite the abundant bird life whales and dolphins were nowhere to be found. Very hard to explain as abundant bird life usually means plentiful food for both them and the whales and yet nothing. Maybe lack of preferred food, these are the mysteries we still don’t fully understand. Due to the lack of encounters we gave our disappointed passengers complimentary tickets in the hope they will be more successful on their next whale watching adventure.

- Sabrina Voswinkel

Birds seen on today’s tours include: atlantic puffins, manx shearwater, common guillemot and chicks, arctic skua, northern gannet, kittiwake, black-backed gull, northern fulmar, eider duck.

We are sailing from the Old Harbour in Reykjavík today for the tourS at 09:00 and 13:00. There could be some movement out on the bay today, so if your are prone to sea sickness we have sea sickness tablets available at our ticket office. Make sure to dress warmly and make use of our warm overalls as it is always colder on sea than on land. For more information contact us by email elding@elding.is or by phone +354 519 5000.

At this time we have to ask that all our guests and staff ensure their own hygiene and safety at all times. Washing hands thoroughly with soap and using a hand sanitiser on a regular basis is advised, as well as wearing a face mask when keeping a 2 metre distance from others is not possible. Masks are available for purchase in our ticket office and hand sanitiser stations are located in high traffic areas.
