NORTHERN LIGHTS CRUISE / 21:00

Report from Elding: Tonight we were expecting an KP index with activity 3, which is already more than enough for Iceland! We knew we had lower clouds, but we knew there would be a few gaps in the sky so we decided to give it a try. Indeed, it was very cloudy. Even Esja mountain, our reference when we first look out for lights was beautifully covered in clouds. Towards the end of the tour, when we started heading back slowly, we spotted a good gap in the sky: we could see stars and... even a little green dash! It was the beginning of Northern lights, and, although we could see the faint green with our naked eyes (and even moving!), it was not strong enough. It came and went and even came back again, but it was still faint and the clouds took over the place. So we decided to give out complimentary tickets so the passengers could have another opportunity with nature!

Few natural phenomena are as mesmerising as the aurora borealis. These shifting curtains of colour sweep across the polar skies, painting them in hues of green, pink, and violet. While their appearance may seem unpredictable, scientists have developed ways to understand when and where they might occur and by studying the activity levels, we can estimate the likelihood of seeing them.
