CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00

Report from Eldey: This morning we sailed out onto the bay. The wind was blowing from the north and building up some swell. First we spotted a fast traveling minke whale that surfaced near our boat. I the rough conditions, it was not easy to keep an eye on him and so it was to no surprise that we lost sight of him after a few minutes. Motivated by the good start we went on further out and were rewarded with 2 humpback whales that were traveling together. First we spotted their blows in the distance and as we got closer we were able to get a good impression of their massive size. We spend a while with the giants before we set course back to Reykjavik. O our way back we crossed the way of 2 more minke whales and also a small pod of around 5 harbour porpoises. With three of our four main species seen, this tour was a full success in difficult conditions.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00

Report from Eldey: The chilly wind was still blowing strong in the afternoon, stirring up the waves, so we bundled up in our overalls, and set out onto the bay. It wasn't long before our trusty captain spotted a rather curious minke whale, which came up to the boat, but soon continued on its way, swimming off into the distance behind us. We continued on, and sailed deep into Faxaflói Bay. Although it took a while, our eagle-eyed captain once again spotted something off in the distance, a blow in the direction of Keilir, so we headed over as quick as possible. As we arrived in the area, we found that there were quite a few seabirds around, always a very good sign that there's a lot of food in the area, not just for them, but potentially for any whales nearby. We also came across a pod of 3 white-beaked dolphins in the area, as well as 2 pairs of blows, 2 pairs of humpback whales! We stuck with the pair closest to us, and they put on quite a show! We got to see them rolling, showing off a pectoral fin, snaking along the surface, and raising their rostrum (snout) above the surface. They began inching their way closer to our boat, they dove right under our bow, so close that we could count the tubercles on their faces. The pod of dolphins also joined in, so we got to see this pair of humpbacks bonding, and the dolphins leaping around them! Always lovely to see these species interacting! Amidst the excitement one of the humpbacks kindly demonstrated the ecosystem service they provide, the whale pump (it pooped)! Once the whales dove down with a final majestic fluke dive, we turned around and began making our way back towards Reykjavík, what a lovely tour!
