CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 09:00
Report from Eldey: The weather was amazing as we went out onto the bay. Sunny skies and just a few clouds wit a slight breeze from the north. On our way out we passed by the RIB boats that already found a whale close to shore but we went on to not bother the animal with one more boat near by. A good decision as it turned out not much later as we spotted the blows of 2 humpback whales swimming together close to the surface. The wind was in our favor and so our captain Otto drifted our boat in the right to and the whales surfaced mere meters in front of our boat. One of them rolled on it side and started to slap his over five meter long pectoral fin on the water. A beautiful and impressive spectacle right in front of us. After some time we left them to see another pair of humpback whales a few hundred meters away. These two were less in the mood to show off but still allowed us to have a good look at their flukes as they went for longer dives. Also a fast minke whale appeared and disappeared quickly allowing us to compare both species more or less side by side. On our way back to the harbor we also passed the way of some elusive harbour porpoise but these shy guys where hard to spot and vanished quickly between the waves. A great tour to start the day with.

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 13:00
Report from Eldey: We were blessed with sunny skies on today's tour with gorgeous views of the Reykjanes peninsula. As we were heading out we had a surprise encounter by a humpback whale a few hundred meters on the right hand side of the boat. It was breaching which mean it was fully leaping out of the water and causing an enormous splash. We headed towards the whale and now it started to do pectoral fin slapping repeatedly. It was fantastic to see the big white fins straight up in the air. This individual came up close to us, checking us out. As we left we had a very spontaneous visit from a minke whale coming right in front of the boat towards us, but it was not seen again. While in this area we also had approximately two harbour porpoises traveling by. Another minke whale came by, but again very hard to spot. We noticed a humpback whale and went to check it out. It was doing close boat inspections and gorgeous fluke dives. Yet more blows caught our attention further away, coming from a pair of humpbacks. Once there, they startled us many times by coming up right in front of the boat, so we could clearly see the bodies and the white pectoral fins through the water. It was incredible! We set sail in the direction of Reykjavik but we kept having encounters. We had two more minke whales at different times, where one of them was coming up multiple times and we finally got a good glimpse of this species. We had one more humpback whale. However it was a bit of a diver and once we got close it showed its fluke and went away again. But we had really nice encounters today so we were very satisfied as we were heading back to port. What a lovely day out at sea!

CLASSIC WHALE TOUR | 17:00
Report from Eldey: The sun was on her way towards the horizon as we went out for our third tour of the day and the conditions were still amazing. Just a few minutes outside of the harbor we spotted the blow of a humpback whale very close to shore near the lighthouse on the isle of Grótta. The water there was so shallow that we could not get close with our boat but as it turned out it was also not necessary as the whale passed us soon and surfaced close to us. It gave us a first good impression of the immense size of its kind before diving long and far. We her go her way and continued further out. The low hanging sun made it easy and difficult for us at the same time. Easy because the blows of the whales got lit up by the low light but difficult because we went straight into the setting sun. Nonetheless we were able to spot several blows. We encountered a pod of around 5-10 harbour porpoises that swam straight at us and passed just meters away from our boat. Then there was a sneaky minke whale that surfaced two times and created a big splash before disappearing under the waves. Finally we spotted the blows of a pair of humpback whales far away and decided to approach them. We got a good look at them before we had to turn around and head back in the direction of the harbor. On our way back we spotted some huge splashes several hundred meters away and of course we tried to get closer to see the breaching humpbacks up close. As it turned out they were not in the mood to perform their impressive surface behavior close to us. However the turn for the whales was rewarded by some jumping white-beaked dolphins! They did not get close to our boat but at lest we had the chance to see them a few hundred meters away playing in the waves. What a great way to end the day with all our four main species seen in one tour!
