Looking back at 2016!

We are in true Holiday spirit, looking back at an already fantastic year. Despite the short daylight hours we are still sailing everyday, when weather allows, in search for whales and northern lights.

The year 2016 started with a bang (literally) when we operated our first New Year’s Eve Cruise  where we watched Reykjavik’s firework show from sea. The tour was a great hit, so we decided to add it to our schedule. Eldey will depart at 10.30 PM sharp, this New Year’s Eve and we are very excited!

In the spring we went looking for new adventures and opened a branch by Oddeyrarbót pier in Akureyri. We bought a brand new boat and sailed it from overseas to Iceland and put in the dry dock for renovations. It was given the name Hólmasól, in honor of the first born child in Eyjafjörður, Þorbjörg Hólmasól. From there we sailed daily this summer and offered both the Classic and Express whale watching option. We are all so excited to be operating in Akureyri as our sighting success to this day is 100%!

Not only were there humpback whales in Eyjafjörður but also here in Faxaflói where they stayed from the beginning of the year up until late summer. Apart from humpbacks we were also seeing an unusal amount of basking sharks, as well as minke whales, white beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises.

We are delighted to see an increase in passenger numbers from past years and because of that we have added extra departures at 9.00 AM in February and November. We also decided to add a winter schedule to our Akureyri tours and now we are sailing several times a week in search for whales and northern lights!

Hopefully the year 2017 will be as enjoyable and prosperous as this year. We wish a Happy Holiday and a prosperous New Year to one and all!
