Better service & more comfort

Hunting the aurora lights by boat gives you more comfort. On the boat we have a heated inside seating area where we also sell light refreshments and hot drinks. Our boats have great 360° viewing platform for searching for the lights and expert aurora guides that help you enjoy the lights to the fullest. You can borrow our free overalls to keep you warm, but make sure to bring a hat and gloves and wear thick socks. If you forget yours, check out the outdoor clothing selection in our gift shop!

We will always try -  as long as conditions are right

Northern lights are a natural phenomena which can’t be guaranteed. However, we are professional aurora hunters with years of experience searching for the lights around Reykjavík. For a good aurora hunt we need three things: Solar activity, clear skies and darkness. A lot of other tour operators will cancel the hunt if the cloud forecast is not in their favour. Well, we won’t! We know that you don’t have many days to hunt down the lights and a full cloud forecast can suddenly clear up, so we want to maximise your chance to the fullest! As long as sea conditions allow, we will always give it a go! If no northern lights are seen, we try again the next day or any day at our your convenience - no extra cost!

Search area and views

The cruise is focused mainly on the southern part of Faxaflói bay, an area just off Reykjavík's Old Harbour. Our experienced captains will decide the sailing route each time after having checked the forecasts for the evening. We usually travel far enough out of the light pollution to better see the lights in the night sky above, still staying close to land and small islands situated in the bay and therefore we can usually expect smooth and comfortable sailing. We will do our best to make the tour as memorable and unique as possible, showing the panoramic views of Reykjavík's city lights. Note that we have preventative measures available on site if you tend to get motionsick -  please ask in our ticket office before boarding.

Information and updates

We will always inform our passengers about the weather forecast for the evening long before departure. Updates are then posted throughout the day to our northern lights diary for all to see. If more information is needed, we are avilable to chat on Facebook, via email (elding@elding.is), on the phone (003545195000) or at our ticket office by the Old Harbour from 8am - 9pm!
