What to do on a rainy day in Reykjavík?

Go to a local swimming pool:

Relaxing in a hot tub is what many of us like to do on a day off, or even after a stressful day at work. Meeting up with friends or bringing the kids on an outing to the swimming pool has been very popular among locals for generations. In recent years, many tourists have now caught up on this trend as it is both a cheaper and more accessible alternative to the nature baths on the outskirts of the city.

Here are some of the pools closest to the city centre:

  • Vesturbæjarlaug
  • Laugardalslaug
  • Sundhöll Reykjavíkur
  • Nauthólsvík geothermal beach

HOT TIP: Remember to shower thoroughly before getting into the pool and don't be afraid to try the hot tubs!

Stroll around Reykjavík:

A variety of shops and restaurants can be found on the main shopping street that ties the city together. At one end you will find the largest church in Iceland and the other a large glass building by the sea. There are plenty of things to explore in the city, no matter the weather.

Here are some landmarks we recommend:

  • Hallgrímskirkja
  • Laugavegur shopping street
  • Sun Voyager
  • Harpa Concert Hall
  • Reykjavík Zoo and Family park
  • Botanical Gardens
  • Öskjuhlíð hill and hiking trails
  • Grótta Lighthouse
  • Viðey Island
  • Perlan

HOT TIP: At the top of Hallgrímskirkja church and Perlan glass dome, you can get a great 360° view of the beautiful city and it's surroundings!

Visit museums:

There are dozens of interesting exhibitions and museums within walking distance of each other. Whether you are interested in modern art, history of Iceland, glaciers or aurora borealis, there are plenty of things to choose from!

Here are some interesting places to visit:

  • Elding's Wildlife Exhibition
  • Saga Museum
  • Maritime Museum
  • Reykjavík Art Museum
  • Aurora Reykjavík
  • Lava Show
  • FlyOver Iceland
  • Settlement Exhibition
  • Perlan - Wonders of Iceland
  • Icelandic Phallological Museum

HOT TIP: The Reykjavík City Card offers free entry and discounts to a great selection of museums and galleries in Reykjavík!

Grab a meal / drink:

Whether you want to try some local food or sit down for a coffee, you won't be disappointed with the options available to you. There are many restaurants in the city centre that offer a variety of good food.

Here are some bars and restaurants you can go to:

HOT TIP: Remember to choose a whale friendly restaurant while travelling in Iceland! Most Icelanders never eat whale meat, why should you?

What is the right season to see whales?
Whales and dolphins tend to stay in the vicinity of Iceland year round, so there really is no 'right season'.
